Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers – strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.
- Barbara Katz Rothman

In my childbirth education classes, I want to provide an interactive, holistic experience. My goal is that you’ll never be bored and will actually have fun while actively engaging in learning childbirth concepts (and hopefully making a friend or two). My vision, however, goes further than that – my deepest hope is that you will be able to gain appreciation for the miracle that is your body, uncover hidden truths about yourself and build excitement of the unknowns in the upcoming journey of your birth.

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
- W. B. Yeats
Although I believe GENERALLY that a less interventive approach to birth a safer, more successful and more rewarding, I never judge someone INDIVIDUALLY for the choices they make for their birth experience. I’ll present what the medical evidence says, then let you come to your own conclusions. Whether you choose to birth medicated or unmedicated, want to breastfeed or bottlefeed, etc. I will support you and help you succeed in birth and in parenting according to your own expectations. There are a million reasons why people make choices and they are all valid. I believe that you are smart enough to make the choices that are right for you and your family.

Women’s strongest feelings [during their birthings], whether positive or negative, focus on the way they were treated by their caregivers [and the amount of control they felt they had during decision-making].
- Penny Simkin and Anne Kennedy
I’ve been trained through two childbirth education programs – Birthing from Within and Lamaze, in addition to my experience as a birth doula. Although my classes follow the Birthing From Within approach and curriculum, I incorporate some of my learning of Lamaze comfort measures, comfort measures from my doula practice, things I’ve picked up over the years, and evidence-based information as it comes up into the class as well. My Lamaze training taught me fun and dynamic ways to teach concrete childbirth concepts (a left-brained approach), and my Birthing from Within training taught me how to incorporate mindfulness and ritual into the moments of childbirth preparation and dig deeper so women and partners discover their own innate abilities (a right-brained approach). I see my classes melding both sides into one powerful learning experience – both mentally and emotionally. I hope you’ll carry the lessons you learn in my class throughout your life.

We have a secret in our culture, and it’s not that birth is painful. It’s that women are strong.
- Laura Stavoe Harm
What might we do in class? Depending on the class participants’ needs and desires, we might:
- work on moving through current fears or past experiences
- learning ancient, unique ways to develop a pain coping mindset
- learn about pain in childbirth, what it might feel like, why we experience it, what your options are for pain coping, and how pain can help you find your way to your baby
- discover how to do the next best thing
- learn new ways to look at old concepts of birth from a place that will be more accessible to you in the intensity of labor
- draw pictures, hold ice, light candles, do massage, and play with toys
- learn more modern pain coping practices such as the birth ball, aromatherapy, massage, acupressure, counterpressure, positions, movement and much more
- turn off the “noise” about what everyone else thinks about the “perfect” birth, and discover what YOU want
- discover ways to get through even your most undesired of birth possibilities
- build understanding of interventions, alternatives and their responsible use
- realize that everything you need to get through the birth experience, whatever it may be, is already inside of you – you just needed to learn how to access it!
I teach only evidence-based curriculum. That means that the majority of medical studies will agree with my teaching. I am constantly educating myself and reading the latest in childbirth research so as to keep my teachings current. I teach all your options in birth and teach you how to advocate confidently during the birth experience so you can be an equal member of the birth team.
If I don’t know my options, I don’t have any.
- Diana Korte
